Bali Beach Hotel: A Hotel with Spirit

Over the years much has been written about the Bali Beach Hotel, the island’s first 5-star property that opened in 1965 marking a new era in tourism. Funded primarily by reparation monies from Japan in lieu of damage caused by their occupation during World War II, the hotel stands majestically on the Sanur beachfront. Dominating the landscape, the Bali Beach Hotel is the island’s tallest building and was established at a time when Indonesia was attempting to modernize itself and incorporate western trends into local design principles.

Kestala, Gumung and Tenganan Trekking

Bali’s diverse landscape lends itself to some excellent trekking opportunities for active travellers. It is always important to wear a pair of sturdy walking shoes and bring along a camera to capture inspiring moments on film. A bottle of mineral water is also necessary to avoid the risk of dehydration along the way.

Bali hails resurgence with colossal 'Kecak'
Oct 01, 2006

The amazing performance of more than 5,000 'Kecak' dancers Friday night at the sacred Tanah Lot Hindu temple in Tabanan regency, south of provincial capital Denpasar, was expected to give a signal to the world that Bali is recovering after it was hit hard by bombings in October 2002 and October 2005.Bali has made thousands of efforts to revive its ailing tourist industry since the island was hit by the two terrorist attacks. One of its endeavors was to hold this "Cakolosal 5000" performance involving dancers, students, government officials, villagers and local community group members.Initiated by Tabanan Regent Adi Wiryatama, the performance was aimed at uniting Balinese from diverse walks of life to stand together and face the more difficult challenges ahead. The Kecak dance is one of Bali's communal artistic activities and generally involves around 50 to 150 people in each performance. Commissioned initially by German artist Walter Spies from a group of Balinese dancers in Gianyar's Bedulu village, the Kecak dance has grown to become one of Bali's most popular dances. The number of dancers in the Cakolosal performance reached 6,400 people, who had practiced more than four months for the event.Officially opened by Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik, the stunning performance of thousands of dancers was made possible due to the dedication and perseverance of choreographer I Gusti Agung Ngurah Supartha. The Kecak dance starts at sunset, and is an adaptation of an episode from the Ramayana epic, featuring a conflict between good and evil. The dance illustrates a scene in which a monkey troupe led by Hanuman go to battle with King Rama of Ayodya against the ogre king Rahwana of Alengka, who has kidnaped Rama's wife Sita.Wearing black-and-white checkered costumes, the dancers entered the Tanah Lot courtyard, creating a dramatic impact against the temple's surroundings. With large waves rolling in from the Indian Ocean, the chanting of the dancers echoed in the dark night. The dancers ran and formed concentric circles shouting the syncopated "cak, cak, cak" chant, from which the dance draws its name. The harmonious chorus was accompanied by swaying and other movements to create various figurations -- waves, flowers, fire -- and as the story teller chanted the Ramayana story, the dancers entered a solemn trance state.Jero was convinced that Cakolosal would restore Bali as one of the world's favorite destinations."It is very difficult now to find airline tickets to Bali, especially during weekends. This indicates that people have already come back to Bali," the minister said. The event was highlighted by a number of other dances dedicated to the god of the sea and all deities who protect the paradise isle

Bali on the back foot again
Sep 28, 2006

In yet another baffling decision that is set to undermine Bali’s long and painful recovery from terrorist activity and natural disaster, the national airline, Garuda Indonesia, is withdrawing some services from Australia, and is hinting that the cuts may not stop with the “temporary” suspension of a Denpasar-Brisbane service.Garuda officials have said that two of the three weekly frequencies to Brisbane (extending to Auckland) will be suspended in the short-term as part of a “broader rescheduling of services” in Asia and the South West Pacific (SWP).That “broader rescheduling” could mean that Garuda will drop Denpasar as a hub altogether and route most flights via Jakarta.Garuda Indonesia’s regional manager SWP, Suranto Yitnopawiro, said the temporary suspension of Brisbane services is being undertaken to allow the airline to service the high demand on the seasonal Hajj routes and to facilitate the scheduled maintenance of the Airbus A330 in the GA fleet. What makes this decision quite incredible is that only in the last few days has agreement been reached to launch a new Bali promotion campaign with Australian wholesalers. As has been extensively reported in TravelWeekly, it took months of delicate negotiations for Bali tourism leaders to reach agreement with central government in Jakarta which had promised $US7 million to boost marketing and promotion in Bali’s core overseas markets. In a complicated scenario, the company charged with driving the new Bali campaign in Australia, must first do the work, collect the accounts and then send them back to Jakarta for payment. On the strength of this promise, Australia’s biggest wholesalers – Flight Centre. Harvey World Travel, Travelscene American Express and Jetset Travelworld – agreed to contribute to the new campaign being coordinated by Indo Multi Media. Some of these travel companies were reluctant to take part, given that several Australian agents lost a lot of money when Air Paradise collapsed last year.

Luxury Hotel Boosts Bali Confidence

A NEW luxury hotel opening in Bali will help restore the resort island's tourism arrivals and lift the economy following two terrorist bombings in the past four years, the Bali tourism board says.

Bulgari, an Italian brand famous for watches and jewellery, has opened its second luxury hotel in the world on the cliff hills of Bali southwest.

The company's chief executive officer believes in Bali's resilience.

"I believe that the bombings will hurt only for a short time, but eventually the tourism figures will go up again," Francesco Trapani said.

The 2005 suicide bombings at Kuta and Jimbaran killed 23, including four Australians, and badly affected tourism. Eighty-eight Australians were among 202 killed in attacks in Kuta in 2002.

Last year's tourism arrivals in Bali were down 26.77 per cent compared to the previous year.

Australian tourist arrivals, ranked third after Japan and Taiwan, dropped 57 per cent.

The Balinese tourism board sees the opening of the Bulgari hotel as an example of international confidence in the island's drawing power.

"I think it will bring the tourism market to a higher segmentation," tourism board executive director Wiwin Suyasa said.

"It proves that Bali can achieve that target level, and adds to our pride and confidence as a main tourist destination," Suyasa said.
