Goa Gajah – Bali’s Sacred Elephant Cave

Goa Gajah or the elephant cave is one of Bali’s most historically significant sites of mysterious origin that dates back to the 11th century. The entire site is thought to have been partially destroyed by a natural disaster and lay undetected for centuries before it was rediscovered in 1923 by a team of Dutch archeologists. Surrounded by towering trees and lush green foliage, there is a pervading ambience of serenity that envelopes the entire area. Many feel an overwhelming sense of stepping back in time upon visiting Goa Gajah. Similarly those who come to meditate or worship are calmed by the spiritual essence of the site.

Big line-up for Bali festival
Jul 29, 2006

Organisers of the third Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, to be held in Bali, have scored a coup in attracting the brilliant British historian and writer William Dalrymple to take part in this year’s event. Other literary guests include Australian author Robert Drewe, discussing his latest book, Grace; ABC foreign correspondent Eric Campbell, who writes about some of the world’s most dysfunctional places in his book, Absurdistan; Chinese author Su Tong, of Raise the Red Lantern fame; and Afro-Cuban poet, novelist and activist Dionne Brand, who lives in Toronto. Dalrymple, 41, is acclaimed for his vast knowledge of India, Asia and the Middle East, on which he draws for a succession of absorbing bestsellers. He has the rare gift of writing popular non-fiction books which are also highly acclaimed by scholars and historians. His impressive collection of literary awards started with his first book, In Xanadu, published when he was 24, following a sixmonth exploration of the ancient Silk Road from Jerusalem to Shangdu, or Xanadu, in Outer Mongolia. His sixth and latest book, The Last Mughal: The Eclipse of a Dynasty, will be published in October. The four-day festival runs from September 30 to October 3, with workshops starting on September 28. More than 70 Indonesian and international poets and writers will take part in discussions, readings, literary lunches, cultural tours and performances.
