No Room for Illegal Online Travel Agencies

Bali Hotel Association announced with110 hotels as its members have committed not to serve the illegal online travel agencies. They will only be working together with the online travel agencies having a clear legality. “We have recommended the hotel members under the BHA not to cooperate with the unlicensed online travel agencies,” said the BHA Executive Director, Djinaldi Gosana.

Ketut Ardana, Chairman of the Association of Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) Bali, said his association was making online data collection to detect the unlicensed travel agencies. The ASITA would find out the information on the unlicensed online travel agencies via the internet. “Having collected the data, they will be submitted to Bali Public Order Officer (Satpol PP). Armed with the data collected by the ASITA, the Satpol PP will conduct law enforcement to the unlicensed online travel agencies,” he said.

Ketut Ardana added that in the near future the ASITA also planned to meet the other stakeholders such as the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), the Indonesia Tour Guide Association (HPI) and the others. Previously, the ranks of the ASITA also agreed to blacklist the employers making cooperation with those illegal businesses. Practice of those illegal travel agencies was inseparable from the role of hotels willing to cooperate with the illegal businesses. Meanwhile, Chairman of the GIPI Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, assessed the government was not fair because the entrepreneurs having permission were required to comply with the rules, while those having no license were free and without any policing. “If this continues, the entrepreneurs can be frustrated,” he complained.

According to him, the tourism associations incorporated in the GIPI Bali had long been shouting related to the rampant illegal businesses. Even, his party had come to related agencies such as the Bali Government Tourism Office, public order officer and other related agencies. This issue was not only experienced by the ASITA, but also by other associations such as the HPI, PHRI, and the Indonesian Marine Tourism Association (Gahawisri) also complained about the same matter, but the attitude of the government in following up the issue remained sporadic and unsystematic.

Tawur Kesanga and Ngrupuk

Tawur Kesanga is a large exorcism ceremony that is held by every village in Bali at the main cross-road of the respective village, which is believed to be the meeting place of demons. The community usually makes Ogoh Ogoh (large monster effigies) that symbolizes the evil spirits that exist within our environment. Noisy processions of these effigies take place just after sunset and are held all over Bali – called Ngrupuk. Every Hindu household will also hold a small, boisterous ceremony by clanging tin pots and burning torches to eliminate the presence of evil spirits and their disturbing forces.

Mejage-jage

Mejage – jage (guarding ritual) is a unique ritual that is held once every three year by the members of Besan Village on the Ngurpuk day. This ritual is not recommended for animal lovers. The ritual starts at the village cemetery, a cow is tied to a bamboo in the cemetery then the cow is brought to Pura Dalem (Death temple) by dragging and hitting the cow with bamboo. In Pura Dalem, the cow is purified with a set of offering and mejaya-jaya ceremony then the cow is cut to create a small wound so the blood drips to the ground, then the cow is brought back to the cemetery to be slaughtered. The head and tail of the cow is reserved for material of Caru (ceremony for negative force of nature). For the head of the cow, it is placed on the bank of a river near the death temple. The head of the cow is believed to have power to ward misfortune and to cure certain illness but those who want to have it must take the head around midnight . The activity of guarding the head of the cow is where the ritual takes its name.

Mabuu-buu

Mebuu-buu is held by the members of Gelogor Village on the Ngrupuk aay. The ritual starts with slaughtering a cow, the head of the cow is reserved for Caru ceremony. Around 11 PM the village members summon the Rangda (deity) and ask for holy water to be used to purify the head of the cow. Then around midnight the village members bring large amount of dried coconut leaves to the cemetery. The dried coconut leaves are placed on a stage that is prepared in the center of the cemetery. The cow head is placed inside the huge pile of dried coconut leaves then the leaves are burned, creating a huge fire. Armed with sickle, the village members rush into the fire to find the cow head. The heat and fire are not problems for them, the village members believe that the cow head can cure illness and bring fortune. The ritual ends when somebody finds the cow head.

Nyepi

This holiday is the Balinese New Year, the day of total silence throughout the island. No activity, no traffic at all on the roads, no entertainment, no fire may be lit for 24 hours. On Nyepi day no travelling is allowed, everyone is required to stay at home. Light is kept to a minimum or not at all, the radio or TV is turned down and, of course, no one works. The whole day is simply filled with the barking of a few dogs, the shrill of insect and is a simple and quiet day on the calendar of this otherwise hectic island.

March 13, 2013
Ngembak Geni

Ngembak Geni is the day following Nyepi where Balinese Hindu’s usually visit family and friends to forgive each other for past wrongdoings. From a religious and philosophical point of view, Nyepi is meant to be a day of self introspection to decide on values such as humanity, tolerance love, patience and kindness.

March 26, 2013
Penampahan Galungan

Penampahan Galungan is a special day when Balinese are busily preparing offerings and dishes for the Galungan day, on the next day. While the women have been busy for days before creating beautifully woven ‘banten‘ (offerings made from young coconut leaves), the men usually wake up well before dawn to slaughter a pig that is unlucky enough to be chosen to help celebrate this occasion. Chickens may also be chosen from the collection of free-range chickens that roam around the house compound. The penjor (richly decorated bamboo pole) is also placed in the front of gate on this day.

March 27, 2013
Galungan

Galungan Day is the most important holiday for Balinese. This holiday symbolizes the victory of Virtue (Dharma) over Evil (Adharma). The striking characteristic of the celebration of this holiday is 'penjor', a tall bamboo pole splendidly decorated with woven young coconut leaves, fruit, cakes and flowers, on the right side of every house entrance. On this holiday, Balinese pray to the temple in their finest clothes and presents specific offering to God and ancestors.
