Healthy a la Balinese

Staying healthy a la Balinese is quite complicated, many factors have to be taken into consideration, and one of them is the harmony of elements within the body. Based on Balinese traditional healing method, the healthiness of a person is determined by the harmony of three basic elements in human body, which is known as Tri Dosha, namely Vatta (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (water); excess amount of one or two elements within the body will disrupt the function of body organ (dhatu) and end up with sickness.

Sin Can Kill

In Balinese’s point of view, sin can cause many kinds of illness to the Balinese, which cannot be cured before they realized their sin, perform necessary ritual as a sign of repentance or to appease the wrath of the deities. A concept of sickness as a punishment for one’s sin or mistake still prevails in Balinese minds and influences their daily life.

Garuda to open Nagoya - Bali route
January 10th, 2008

Tokyo (ANTARA News) - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia in Japan will carry through its plan to open a Nagoya - Bali route despite the fact that the air transportation business has been severely affected by the soaring oil price, a spokesman said.

“The air transportation business has been greatly affected by the soaring oil price but our management is predicting that the route will be profitable,” Garuda district manager for Japan, China and the United States Arif Wibowo said on Wednesday.

He said Garuda was enjoying the support of Centrair, the airport authority in Chubu, the international airport for the central part of Japan.

“We also have the support of the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry,” he added.

He further said Garuda in Tokyo had conducted a study and approached related parties in Nagoya in relation with the planned opening of the new route.

The route was expected to be opened in June this year to support Garuda`s business expansion in Japan with a flight frequency of three times a week, he added.

Garuda is now serving a Tokyo-Bali-Jakarta route once per day and an Osaka-Bali-Jakarta route five times a week.

On the cost of a flight, he said, “The ticket will be around US$1,000 per person or some Y110,000.”

The ticket was previously sold at US$700 - US$800 per person.(*)

Indonesian tourism promo missing the point
January 12th, 2008

Dennis G. Kloeth, Jakarta

Tourism promotion, like promotion for any other product, has to do with common sense, knowledge about the market and target group and must be followed by creative thinking and clever and cost-effective marketing.

With all due respect to all people currently involved in Indonesia Tourism promotion, a close working relationship with true marketing experts is direly needed and should be made imminent. An important job like this should not be left up to well-meaning Tourism Ministry people alone but be shared with or be placed in the hands of a team of true and genuine tourism and marketing experts.

The new Visit Indonesia Year 2008 slogan "100 years of national awakening" is proof of the lack of such a think tank as it seems to propone the Culture and Tourism Ministry's desire to promote the country's political track record rather than the country's inner beauty and attractiveness as an excellent tourism destination.

A slogan is a tag line and it immediately sets the tone for what it tries to say or sell. Getting this slogan wrong may well burn all the money that is spent in taking promotion of a product well beyond the point of introduction.

Countries like Singapore, Malaysia, India and the Maldives, to name just a few, seem to have found the golden formula. They are showing us the way in how to sell the country by stringing together eye-catching and thought provoking images framed by a catchy tune and that create and sell a traveler's dream, the one and only important factor in trying to attract foreign tourists. Keeping open our eyes and ears and be willing to learn from somebody else that clearly is successful at what he or she does, is all we need to do....(read more)
