The Musi River
Palembang straddles the broad Musi River, the two halves of the city linked by the Ampera
Bridge. Any true 'Palembang' experience must include a river trip. Bustling floating
markets and glimpses of traditional ways of life along the river will stay with you long
after you return home. The annual Bidar Race is well worth including in your plans if you
are in the area around Independence Day, August 17th. The boats over 24 meters long and '
only 3/4 of a meter wide, powered by as many as 50 oarsmen.
"Limas" TheTraditional Houses
Most Limas houses are built along river banks, facing away from the water so daily
household activities can be done in privacy. These very ornate wooden houses are raised on
stilts, and are usually 15- 20 meters in width and from 30-60 meters in length. Virtually
every surface in the house, from columns, door and window frames to ventilation panels are
intricately carved. Make, arrangements through the tourist office to visit one of these
beautiful homes.
The State Museum
Opened in 1977 the collection of over 2000 relics and antiquities from around the province
make a visit worthwhile. See ancient household articles, utensils, looms, hunting
tools, a bridal room and some preserved animals of the region.
"Punti Kayu" Natural Pine-Forest
This recently built recreational complex covers an area of 50 hectares, including an
amusement park, a recreation park, a natural forest, and a man-made lake. Because of its
proximity to the capital and easy accessibility, this complex mainly caters to the local
people of Palembang.
Ki Gede Ing Suro ancient cemetery
This cemetery dates back from the 16th century where as many as
38 ancient tombs are found of which one of them belongs to Ki Gede Ing Suro, one of the
prominent forefathers of south Sumatera's present society. Notably, these 38 tombs are
found under one roof of one building.
Tenang waterfall
The Muara Enim regency, two hours from Palembang, is a land of rivers and waterfalls. The
biggest is the Tenang Waterfall, where the water cascades from a height of 90 meters into
a deep pool.
Bangka Island and Belitung Island
These are often known as the 'tin' islands, because of the huge reserves of this metal
which have been mined here since the 18th century, but are home to some of the best
beaches in Southeast Asia. 44 km north of Pangkal Pinang, Bangka's capital, is the fine
white sand beach of Matras, perfect for sun-bathing and relaxing. Nearby Parai Beach is a
new resort area with bungalows, a swimming pool, shops, a disco and water sports. Adjacent
to Bangka island is Belitung island, with equally fine beaches and recreational
activities. The best Belitung beaches are on the north coast or to the southwest. The
Belitung Tourism Development Corporation is in the midst of a huge tourism project at
Tanjung Kelayang Beach, half an hour from the capital by car. You can stay at the Kelayang
Beach Hotel, and other resort hotels are currently being developed.
Kamero Island
Forty kilometres from Palembang, Kameri Island is a popular recreation site in the middle
of the Musi river. The island has a Buddhist temple.
