Batam Island is
one of Indonesia’s most brilliant success stories. Once a
sleepy backwater, it was designated a free trade zone by the
government in 1989, and it is now a thriving hub of industry,
commerce, and luxury tourism. Batam’s close proximity to Singapore
- it is only 45 minutes away by ferry - makes it a popular
weekend getaway for Singaporeans in search of relaxation and
recreation. The main town of Nagoya is known for its nightlife,
as well as its fascinating night market, which boasts a wide
variety of food stalls, including Batam’s specialty: fresh
fish.
The northeast
Nongsa peninsula is where Batam’s best accommodations are
to be found. Three, four, and five star hotels offer luxurious
facilities, private beaches, fitness centers, and world class
golf courses. Batam's restaurants offer international standard
fare, and the island’s shopping centers offer products from
around the globe.
