Lampung Province, is the fourth largest city
in Sumatra. Despite its size, however, it is renowned for
its relaxed atmosphere and friendly inhabitants. The Provincial
Museum offers visitors an interesting introduction to the
region’s history and culture. The Krakatau Monument, commemorating
the 1883 eruption, will fascinate history buffs.
Lampung
is also an excellent place to shop for the region’s famed
local crafts. The best known of these are the so-called “ship
cloths,” which portray sailing vessels in rich, hand-dyed
colors using geometric motifs, and the tapis cloths
which are exquisitely embroidered with golden thread. Travelers
can find banking, communications, and basic medical facilities
in the city.
Lampung
boasts several quality accommodations, including a four star
Sheraton, which offers international standard services. It
is also a great place to sample local cuisine, including fresh
Lampung seafood and a range of spicy Sumatran specialties.
