| The Beauty and Life of Lake Tempe Lake Tempe, the largest lake in Sulawesi Island, is 13.000 hectare in width and dubbed as the biggest wetland fishery area in the world. Along the lakeside, you can observe the fisherman's floating houses which were built in Bugis nuance, standing in a row facing the lake. The floating fisherman village is not just located along the lakeside but also in the middle of the lake. This middle-of-the-lake village is decorated with colorful flags and inhabited by around 30 traditional fisherman families. This place can be reached by a traditional boat for about one hour from the harbour of Tempe. Along the trip you might be seeing some various types of birds of the lake, flying in a row or settling on the grass or flowers that live floating houses in the middle of the lake. On August 23rd, a sea festival usually called Maccera Tappareng (literally means purifying the lake) is held by the inhabitants of the lake. The festival are highlighted by many interesting attractions such as traditional boat race, decorated boat competition, kites competition, the election of Ana` Dara (princess) and Kallolona (prince) of Wajo Regency, Padendang (beating mortar), traditional music performance, Bissu dance played by transsexuals and other traditional performances.
