There are dense tropical rain forests, vast numbers of palm and banana trees, and a great many varieties of wild flowers and lianas, the orchids are world famous. Abundant edible delicious seasonal fruits include: the Kasturi Magnefera delmyana, the Duian Durio zibethinus, the Rambutan Nephelium lappaceuin, the Cempedak Artocarpus potyphema, the Langsat Lansium domesticum.

The forest is the habitat of a great variety of animals; at least 500 species of birds, more than 200 species of reptiles and amphibians, and over 70 species of freshwater fish.

The great hornbill bird Bucerus rhinoceros is worshipped by several of the tribes; there are numerous kinds of bats and butterflies, and monkeys and gibbons are found in the rain forest canopy. Meanwhile, the orang-utans have now become quite rare and the government has taken positive steps to protect them from extinction.

Other larger animals of the forests include deer, bears, wild pigs, wild oxen, wild cats, the rare yellow or golden bulls and, of course, this is the home of the mouse-deer "kancil" or "pelanduk' a small creature whose legendary cleverness at outwitting larger animals has made it a hero in Indonesian folktales.

In the delta islands of the Barito river, easily reached from Banjarmasin, the monkeys are protected. The rarest species is the Bekantan Nasalis larvaus, in which the male is distinguishable by its long drooping nose.
