Culture and tradition in South Kalimantan are the assimilation through ages of those of the Dayak, Malay and Javanese. Then came the influence of Islam which was introduced by Arabic and Persian Traders.

The culture can be easily seen from the way of living of the people, especially in art, such as dances, music, traditional dresses, games and ceremonies. "Batamat" for example is a ceremony held for a teenager who has completed the reading of the Holly Qur’an.

He will be dressed in full according to the tradition, and an umbrella with beautiful fragments will be held over his head. "Tasmiah" is a tradition to give a baby name.
There is also a sea festivity called "Mappanre Tasi" which literally means feeding the sea.

This takes place at Pagatan, a sea resort in Pagatan, can reach by land transport and will take about 5-hour trip from Banajarmasin. The inhabitants are mostly Bugenese from Sulawesi. This festivity usually takes place in April and has become an annual folk tradition. This sacral tradition will be accompanied by various traditional shows at sea as well as on land. Local handicrafts will be put on public display.

The people of Laksado a mountainous resort at Hulu Sungai Selatan, 145 kms from Banjarmasin holds "Aruh" a Dayak Tradition usually 3 times every years. This ceremony will be held after the cutting of forest for new rice fields; this is usually in August. Then in November during the seeding and finally after harvest time. This final cycle is called "Aruh Ganal" of "Great Feast" and this usually in July to December.

In August around the Proclamation Day of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia along the Martapura river you may find traditional rowing boat contest, festival of decorated boats and a paper lamp procession. These folk festival are participated by everybody. On 24 September the anniversary of Banjarmasin there are a lot folk shows. Usually a contest to select Miss and Mister Banjar.
