Women throughout East Nusa Tenggara still hand-weave their textiles using natural dyes and hand-spun cotton. This technique is known as ikat weaving, and Ikat means to knot or to bind.
The desired pattern is bound onto the thread and this is then dyed before weaving. In Flores the textiles are normally sewn together to form a tube known as a sarong, which serves many practical purposes.
Every district in East Nusa Tenggara has its own patterns and designs. Special motifs will be created for auspicious ceremonies such as grand weddings and funerals.
Flores textiles are rustic in color with motifs of chickens, mountains, and traditional houses. The main weaving areas are Pagal, around Ruteng; Wolotopo and Nggela in Ende region, and Sikka in Maumere region.
Ikat textiles in Sumba are worked and then exchanged at important ceremonies, with each one signifying social status. At the funerals, the most exquisite textiles are placed in the grave for use in the after world.
The textiles of the west and east regions of Sumba differ in design and color. Bold, bright designs depicting battles, livestock and people, are found in the east. Textiles in the west tend to be more dense depicting abstract patterns, with triangles representing buffaloes' eyes and rectangles representing horses' tails.
