The indigenous people of west Nusa Tenggara were animiste, but were converted to Islam in the sixteenth century when the religion spread over Java and the kingdom in Lombok and Sumbawa.

At the end of the seventeenth century, Hinduism was brought into Lombok when the king of Karangasem (Bali) wanted to expand his kingdom. To this very moment their descendants are still living in Mataram and its surroundings.

Then came the Dutch colonials with their Christianity and christian missions. Through advances trade with other countries, Buddhism was introduced. But through people are of different religions they can live side by side in harmony with mutual raspect for one's religions
