No record in history proves the origin of the tribes inhabiting the northern part of Sulawesi island but folktales such as the story of 'Toar and Lumimuut' of Minahasa and Loloda "Mokoagow" of Bolaang Mongondow tell that, the tribes in North Sulawesi came from Vietnam and Kampuchea in South East Asia.

The City of Manado is predicted to be populated since XVI century and started from XVII century (1623) the name "Manado" has been used as the subtitute for "Wenang".

The word Manado itself was coming from local language Minahasa "Manarou" or "Mana dou" which means "Far away".

According to the history, the city of Manado was famous and visited by many countries since XVI century. But not until XVII century, year 1623 to be precise, the site Minahasa - Manado became world wide famous, and popular among European for its spice/herbs according to recorded documents.

Under Dutch colony, started from July 1 1919, Manado district was stated as City Council where a mayor was appointed as the head of the city. Representatives was also formed in that year.
