Overland transportation in East Kalimantan is very limited due to the land being covered in forest and water, and is generally only focused on the towns. However, the government is now planning to build a by pass that connects every province.

Water and river transportation, for goods and passengers, is an important means of reaching the inland area. The ypes of transportation used include Long Boat, Speed Boat and Motor Boat.

The Semayang Harbour in Balikpapan is the gateway to the Southern part, while the harbour of Tarakan is the Northern Gate. Several Kinds of commuter boat and ship come from all over the archipelago, such as: K.M Kambuna, K.M Kerince, and K.M Awu.

The Sepinggan Airport in Balikpapan is the second busiest airport in Indonesia and is the gateway to East Kalimantan, frequented by several airlines, including: Garuda Indonesia, Sempati air, Merpati Airlines, Bouraq Airlines. Remembering that East Kalimantan is covered by water and forest, and in order to make communication easier, some pioneer airstrips have been built in inland areas such as Long Bawan, Long Apung, Datah Dawai, and Tabang.
