As the age of Majapahit declined, Islam, a new civilization influenced Javanese culture. In East Java, however, Islam has begun to influence long before the empire of Majapahit collapsed. In the village of Leran, west of Gresik regency the tomb of Fatimah binti Maimun could be found. Its tombstone dated from AD 1082.

Then in the beginning of IS- century Islam emerged and strongly spread throughout Java. The "Wali Songo' or 'Nine Saints' were the Java's pioneers in the spreading of the Islamic faith. They were Maulana Malik Ibrahim in Gresik, Sunan Ampel in Surabaya, Sunan Giri in Gresik, Sunan Bonang in Tuban, Sunan Drajat in Lamongan, Sunan Kudus in Kudus, Sunan Kalijaga in Demak, Sunan Muria in Mount Muria and Sunan Gunung Jati in Cirebon.

The burial tombs of Wali Songo missionaries scattered along northern coast of Java Island between Surabaya and Cirebon in West Java. Five of those tombs are founded along East Java's northern coast. Wali Songo Pilgrimage Tour then is the right option of the Moslem ritual tour. It is widely favored by Javanese Moslems.

Touring north of the city of Surabaya, one finds more traditional culture in the Arab Quarter. In addition to numerous shopping stalls selling Middle Eastern trinkets and Arabic food, the focus of the area is the Ampel Mosque. The Mosque is at the heart of Surabaya's Muslim heritage which stretches back to the fifteenth century. This impressive structure was built by Sunan Ampel.

Among the Wali Songo, Sunan Ampel is the most charismatic figure. In AD 1481 he was buried behind the mosque. His tomb is regularly visited by thousands of pilgrims. It is difficult to leave this area without a feeling of the Arabian nuance, its fragrance, its Muslim society and much more. Your next destination is the tomb of Maulana Malik Ibrahim in Gresik.

Gresik (18 kilometers north west of Surabaya) in many centuries gone by prosperous trading port, from where Islam entered East Java between 13th and 14th centuries. Maulana Malik Ibrahim who was buried at Gapura Wetan, Gresik was one of the earliest Islamic missionaries in Java. His tombstone is seemingly ordered from Gujarat in northwestern India.

It is most exquisite and delicate specimen's crafted marble on the tombstone dated back AD 1419, the death of Maulama Malik Ibrahim. Three kilometers west of this tomb your next visit is the tomb of Sunan Giri. It is located on the Giri Hill. To approach this tomb, along steps will lead to the tomb's complex flanked by stone head of dragons. The Majapahit sculpture style appears on these ornaments.

The tomb itself is decorated by a lovingly Norked in trellis and carved wood peculiar to the Javanese culture. Gresik's past can be easily seen in the narrow streets of the town, and the strong Islamic tradition shown by the women in white shawls and veils. The following spot to be visited is the tomb of Sunan Drajat. It is 40 minutes drive from this place.

Raden Qosim or Sunan Drajat was the Aunan Ampel's second son. Sunan Drajat is highly respected as his social activity. His wise word reflects his charitableness: 'Give some cloth to the undress person, give some food to the hungry person, give a stick to a slipperiness person'. The tomb is set in closed building. The entrance and front panel of main tomb is ornamented by a distinctive and defined Woodcarving. The crafts of lava are a tribute to the rich and varied heritage of a country. Close to Sunan's tomb a small museum displays a fragments of gamelan (Javanese musical instrument).

The last tomb to be visited is the tomb of Sunan Bonang in Tuban, 90 km iorth west of Surabaya. Sunan Bonang or Raden Makhdum Ibrahim was the Sunan Ampel's eldest son. He has devoted the scattering of Islamic faith in Java all his life. He was highly respected by his followers. This tomb complex is unique; some ancient disks were stuck onto the walls. Those porcelains were decorated with Arabic letter, some other in Chinese style. Next to this tomb a nice looking a Jamiq Mosque can be another tourist attraction in Tuban.

It was built in AD 1894 in the Persian style. The Muslim world is a world of traditions, oral history, verbal legends beliefs, rituals, customs and traditions, and much of it is oral dissemination, because it lives simultaneously in the past and present much of history seems to be alive and continuous. They left some masterpieces, the East lava's legacies for future generation.

Touring along this coastline will not be disappointed; in addition the northern road you pass by was built by Governor General Daendels (AD 1808-1811) during the Dutch occupation. Along this road line there a many tourist attractions to be visited.
