Fort Rotterdam which is now known as Benteng Ujung Pandang is a historical artifact of the greatness of the past kingdom of South Sulawesi. Gowa kingdom was the strongest and the most successful kingdom during the seventeenth century. Ujung Pandang during that time was known as a trading city which then was known as Macassar.

If it was viewed from the sea, the Kingdom of Macassar during that period was a n area which was completely fortified. This kingdo possessed 17 forts which protected the city and the areas around it. In the year of 1667 when the force of Gowa wa under the power of Dutch, all forts except the fort of Ujung pandang were destroyed. Fort of Sombaopu two years later was totally destroyed by the Dutch government.

Ujung Pandang fort was built in 1545 by the King of Gowa X. His name was Imarigau Daeng Bonto Karaeng lakiung, who was also well- known as Karaeng Tunipallangga Ulaweng.

The basic form of this fort is square with the Portuguese architectural style. It was made of clay. It takes the model of the European forts during the sixteenth and seventeenth century, with the additional protusion attached to the basic form of the fort, make it looks like a turtle shape. Some resources point out that the turtle form reflects the Gowa Kingdom as a maritime kingdom and this fort acted as the protector of the capital city.

During the Dutch colonialis, the fort was rebuilt, and renamed Fort Rotterdam. During that period the fort and its area started to be the center of the governmental and commercial activities. During the Japanese colonialism that fort functioned as the center of Agricultural and languages studies.

At present, the buildings in the fort are utilized by the Prehistoric and Historic Preservation Affairs (Suaka Peninggal Sejarah dan Prasejarah), Cultural Center (Arts, dances, music, etc), and including the public museum. This museum displays and preserves various historical namely, historical objects, manuscript, statues, crafts (ceramic) and traditional clothes, and other cultural objects from most of the ethnic in South Sulawesi.
