According to the 1990 census, the total population of South Sumatra was 6.313.074 with average density of 58,78 people/km2. The original people comprise of ethnic groups with various local language and dialects. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language.
Those ethnic groups are Palembang, Ogan, Komering, Semendo, Pasemah, Gumay, Lintang, Musi, Rawas, Meranjat, Kayuagung, Ranau, Kisam, Bangka, Belitung and many others. All those ethnic groups mix each other in a social relationship including with the migrated ethnics and foreigners.
Even inter-ethnic relationship is tied up by marriage. Each ethnic group or tribe has traditional culture of their own which generally shown up in the marriage ceremony and other special events. Even each ethnic group in south Sumatra has deference’s of similarity in art and culture.
However each existing group has specific form of culture and language structure yet it is still a unity that represents a regional custom of South Sumatra. They influence each other so that one cultural element will be found in other cultural element. This matter is caused by diffusion, acculturation and adaptation. The unity and uniform of culture is shared among its members.
