The West Sumatrans speak Minang. Each nagari or district has its own dialect. Thanks to the school system, which has been introduced to this province for many years. People in both the rural and urban areas can speak Indonesian well. Nagari is a unique communal unit in Minangkabau.

Like local language of the other ethnic group in Indonesia, there is no fundamental difference between the Minangkabau language and the Indonesian national language, neither in form nor in rule. The difference is often only in spelling, particularly in the usage of vowels.
