Top:/Destinations/Yogyakarta/Places to visit/Parangtritis Beach
Jagged cliffs meet stormy seas over a glistening black sand beach called Parangtritis, which is located on the Indian Ocean only 28 kms south of Yogya. With its raging surf, star-lit nights, and ever shifting dunes, Parangtritis opens itself to myths, mystics and meditation.
Currents and undertow are very strong here and tradition says it is the realm of the Queen of the Southern Ocean, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul, who has a mystical relationship with the reigning Sultan in Yogya. Beware of wearing the colour green if you go near the beach as it is believed this attracts the Queen to bring the wearer down to her watery domain.
Near Parangtritis there are located other interesting attractions for visitors: ParangWedang, a mineral hot spring which flows the whole year around. It is agood place for visitors seeking skin treatments.
Parangkusumo, which according tojavanese beliefs is considered to be a sacred place as it is believed to be the meeting place between the Kings who ruled Yogya and Ratu Kidul, Queen of the Southern Ocean. As well, about 55 kms from Yogya, and to the east of Parangtritis, there are a number of good beaches including Baron, Krakal, and Kukup beaches. |
