The Yogya Keraton (or Sultan's Palace) was designed and built in stages between 1756 and 1790 by Yogya’s founder, Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. The Kraton is a splendid example of traditional Javanese court architecture, and it was carefully designed to form a model of the Javanese cosmos with each gateway, pavilion and courtyard having a specific symbolic meaning.

It is still a royal residence and remains the focal point for traditional Javanese art and culture where visitors can see gamelan orchestras as well as palace dancers rehearsing every Sunday. The modest entrance fee includes an excellent guided tour in a variety of languages. Open: Monday-Sunday (8.00am-2.00pm) Closed at 12.00 pm on Friday.
