Banten was founded in the early 16th century, upon the collapse of the Majapahit Empire, by the son of the King-Priester of Tjirebon, the Sultanate of Banten. In this era, Banten was a princely state of great wealth and splendor occupying the north coast of West Java which led to the development of a sea trade economy. Its port was visited by a multitude of traders from Java, and other nations such as Turkey, Bengal, Arabia, Persia and Gujarat on the western coast of India. More than l500 tones of precious spices were exported from Banten.
