Approximately 43,089,300 people inhabit the province of Banten while the population density averages 932 persons per square kilometer (2000). There are a reclusive group of approximately 3,000 people, called the Badui, who claim to be the original, pre-Islamic inhabitants of the Sunda highlands. They live in the remote Kendeng mountains in the southern part of Lebak. Their language is an archaic dialect of the Sundanese language.
The Badui have preserved their traditions through a strict policy of isolation, shunning visitors, and rejecting attemps by the government to integrate them into the modern world. They live in an area covering 5,101 hectares of land at Kenekes Village in the subdistrict of Leuwidamar. Their society consists of three inner villages, offlimits to outsiders, surrounded by the outer villages that have limited contact with the outside world and act as intermediaries for the inner villages. Most of the Badui are farmers, they also produce handicrafts, palm sugar and woven products. Their religion is a blend of animism and Hinduism. |
