Lampung, the most southern of Sumatra’s provinces, offers a fascinating and diverse blend of natural and cultural attractions. It is a complex mix of different ethnic groups, including the descendants of the 11th century Sriwijayan Empire, together with hundreds of thousands of trans-migrants from overcrowded Java and Bali who brought with them customs and religious culture such as the traditional shadow puppet play and the Balinese-style Hindu temples.
Lampung’s environment also offers visitors a rich range of activities. The province’s fertile soil supports a thriving agricultural industry and visitors can see clove, coffee, pepper and coconut plantations scattered throughout the region. Travelers can trek through Way Kumbas National Park, a 1,300-square kilometer lowland forest, and even ride the elephants at the Elephant Center Park.
Lampung is also the place from which many visitors choose to travel, by boat, to visit Krakatau. This is Indonesia’s most famous volcano, it is located in the sea between Sumatra and Java and its devastating eruption in 1883 caused legendary destruction.
