East Kalimantan, a major producer of oil and timber is, economically, the most vital province on the island of Borneo. Its capital, Samarinda, the center of the timber industry, bustles with activity. The city of Balikpapan is the hub of Kalimantan’s oil industry, and welcomes business travelers with a variety of, international standard, facilities and attractions. There is also a number of superb natural and cultural attractions spread out over East Kalimantan’s vast area.

Visitors to the province can trek through the forests to visit indigenous Dayak villages, where extended families live together in traditional long houses, practicing their ancient rituals and creating a stunning variety of arts and crafts. A visit to the Kutai Game Reserve, home to orangutans and other wildlife, or to the Orchid Reservation, which cultivates 27 different species of the exotic flower are unique experiences. Meanwhile, a journey down the white waters of the Makaham River by raft, is guaranteed to leave an unforgettable impression.

And for travelers looking for the ultimate tropical experience, Derawan Island, off East Kalimantan’s coast, offers pristine white beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving, and glimpses of exotic animals such as sea cows and huge green turtles.
