Amlapura is the capital of Karangasem Regency, situated 78 km east of Denpasar – the capital of Bali. Since the reign of Karangasem Kingdom, Amlapura became the center of government. Karangasem owns several ‘puri’ (palace), but only Puri Agung Karangasem – the royal palace of Karangasem Kingdom – opens for visitors.

It is an artistic building combining the styles of Balinese, Chinese and European architecture, which was built by Anak Agung Gede Jelantik – the first king of Karangasem.

This palace features many inheritances of the former kings of Karangasem, including the antique household tools, and the worthy royal equipments. All of the legacies are well-kept and well-maintained. There are also some old photographs of the royal family, bedroom, the dresses which was formerly used by the king.

There is a building called Maskerdam stands in the palace’s compound. The building used to be the guest house where the Kings of Karangasem treated their honorable guests.

On the southern part of the palace, there is a ‘balai gili’ which was the main resting place of the former kings. The balai gili is surrounded by a lotus pond linked with a building overlooking the pond.
