Desa (Village) Les is situated in Tejakula – the easternmost district of Buleleng Regency. The village sizes 769 hectare borders with Java Sea And Lombok Strait to the north (which is rich for its coral reef potencies), Bangli forest to the south, Tejakula village to the west and Panuktukan village to the east.
One culture that differs this village to others in Bali, is the custom of burying the dead, rather than the cremation ceremony. Beside that, for years Les has been known as the traditional transit port for the Indonesian traditional fishermen who sailed from east to do trading in Java and Bali Islands.
There are nine sub-villages in Les, in which two of them inhabit the coastal area, and most of the villagers are traditiona l fishermen who catch tropical aquarium (ornamental) fish. On October 28th, 2003, Les was declared as the tourism-fishery village with nature-friendly concept. Some reformations in ornamental fish catching are brought within. Cyanide is forbidden, while the specially-designed nets which would not destruct the coral reef are used.
The coral reef restoration along the Les coast is carried out. The rehabilitation began with the identification of the coral reef type in donor area. The donor area supplies the coral fragments which then are planted through the coral farming method. The coral fragments then will become the new colonies in the coral farming sites which later provides coral reef to be transplanted in the rehabilitated area.
The learning process of coral reef rehabilitation then turns the Les villagers to be the experts in coral reef preservation. Their knowledge and skills are brought to Kuta beach to support various projects of coral reef restoration and transplantation.
The main attraction of Les tourism is the fishery activities associated with the coral reef preservation. The diving activities being carried out in this village are concerned on the fishery tourism diving and the coral transplantation tourism diving. The synergy of the ornamental fish industry, tourism industry, and the coral reef preservation proves that the ecosystem harmony is above anything for the sustainable life. |
