He reported about the political situation in Bali and some events that occurred in Kuta during the period.
On that time, Kuta (formerly called as ‘Couten’) was the most important seaport in South Bali that used as to dock the imported and exported stuffs.
Kuta was the jurisdiction territory of Kesiman Kingdom of Denpasar, therefore in ruling his power in Badung area, Pierre Dubois was supported by the King of Kesiman.
In his report, Dubois tells that the west coast and the east coast of Kuta seaport settled by the mixing community of Balinese who were mostly fishermen and the merchantmen from China and Bugis.
He told that there were about 400 Balinese families and 40 Chinese and Bugisnese families lived in Kuta on that time. Most of the Balinese who lived in Kuta were those who escape from other kingdoms by some cases. They lived in Kuta to avoid the punishments.
The situation in Kuta on that period also told by Mr. Jembrong, a merchantman from Banyuwangi, East Java. He said that on May 20, 1835, he leaved Banyuwangi to Bali Island and then to Lombok Island. He arrived at west coast of Kuta on August 18, 1835.
He told that Kuta was a crowded seaport. It used to be the trade center between Bali and Singapore. Mr. Jembrong said that he saw about 40 boats were docked at Kuta on that time, 16 of them came from Singapore.
The boats from Singapore carried some merchandise items, such as: opium, tools made from iron, clothes, ‘gambir’ (a kind of ingredients used in betel chewing), fire-guns, ammunition, Chinese coins and some stuffs made by England.
The opium priced f 72 per ball, while the boats owned by the Bugis merchandiser carried rice, skin cow, tobacco, cotton, and other agricultural products.
