The religious celebrations in Bali all take place in accordance with the complicated Balinese calendar system. But serious studying is required in order to totally understand this calendar.
In general, most of the religious celebrations, including the special holy days and temple festivals, take place every 210 days. This is with the exception of the Balinese New Year, known as Nyepi, and also the Siwaratri, both of which come about annually.
Each religious celebration has its own philosophical background that is mainly aimed at teaching people to follow the proper way of living based on religious teaching, and the ceremonies with their cultural uniqueness are all a major part of Balinese life.
You will find that there are certain activities, decorations and paraphernalia, that are all relevant for the special days. You will be amazed at the street decorations. These bamboo poles are known as ‘Penjor’, and are adorned with young coconut leaves and erected everywhere to mark the ocassion of Galungan, the victory day.
Meanwhile, you may be surprised to learn that the Balinese celebrate their New Year in total silence and darkness! Whoever you are, and wherever you come from, while you are in Bali you will also be able to watch, enjoy, and even participate in some of the religious celebrations.
