 Inspired by the thought: “Tourism should be for Bali instead of Bali for Tourism”, an Indian- educated Balinese, the late Ida Bagus Mantra, who was the former Director General of Culture (1968-1978) and Governor of Bali (1978-1988), came up with the brilliant idea of carrying out a festival to preserve and to develop the Balinese culture.
The festival, which later became known as The Bali Arts Festival, is an annual fiesta that lasts for a full month, comprising daily performances, handicraft exhibitions and other related cultural commercial activities which are presented by every region in Bali.
Performers from all over Bali flock to Denpasar, the capital city, to present their offerings of dance, music and beauty. Thus making this annual festival the perfect opportunity to fully experience the arts of Bali.
On display at the festival are trance performances from remote mountain slopes, forgotten or recently revived village dances, food and offering contests, classical palace dances, stars of Balinese stage, odd musical performances, and the new creations of the Denpasar dance schools, as well as contemporary choreography and dance companies from other islands and abroad. |
