Pleasant stay

Reviewed May 24, 2012 1 person found this review helpful My partner and I stayed at the Kayu Raja Villas over the Easter break. The place was lovely, clean, the service was good with friendly smiles and the food wasnít too bad either. We would stay here again, and I highly recommend it.

We had the pick up airport transfer when we arrived. Distance to the airport is reasonable, time to get there though is bad if caught in peak hour traffic, which is what happened to us. After check in, we had to take our own luggage to the villa, not a biggie. By now, it was pretty much dinner time. We didnít know where to eat so we went to the villa restaurant. Nice clean surrounding, very Balinese. No one else dined there that night while we were there I think because most would be enjoying the rest of Bali. To our surprise, the food was actually quite tasty and reasonable sized serves. The waiters were all very polite with friendly smiles, great service. The price however was reasonable for what we ate but on the expensive side for Bali standards. We had 2 soups and 2 mains and 2 drinks, costing just over AU$40. On other nights of our stay, we ate at other places nearby, most costing half the price.

The villa room was a delight. The pictures on the website pretty much say it all, except, our villa didnít have the top rooftop massage beds. Pool was clean. The filter ran every morning. There is also a pool light so we could have a swim at night. There was an extremely small amount of algae/mould on the top part of the pool wall where the water level starts. It wasnít visible until I got in the water. Oh actually and a bit of mould on the wall under the sunbed outside which was visible when I got in the water. I guess that part never really dries properly because of the lack of sun, but gets wet often. There was the odd brown millipede on the last night near the pool, but I would think that is normal for an outside area with plants. As with mozzies, yes they were there too. We forgot to use insect repellent on the first morning after our swim, bit of a mistake coz got a few bites. With insect repellent on the other nights, it was fine. I think its normal for Bali, so donít let that deter you from checking this place out.

We managed to keep our room cool most of the time (decent aircon) and also the mozzies out by closing the door when we were getting in and out. Bathroom was clean and very decent sized with double basins and shower and bath area had a glass panel separating it from the sleeping area. There was a shower curtain over the glass for those that donít wanna see their room companion showering/having a bath. I agree with another review, there was a bit of a foul smell from the water in the toilet and also the shower drain. It came with the usual little bonuses hotels have like 2 of everything such as shower cap, sewing kit, dental kit, and a few more things I cant remember. Generous sized tubes of shampoo, conditioner, shower/bath gel and body lotion were also provided. Shampoo smelt so nice too. Bed was very comfortable and spacious for 2 people. TV had lots of channels, 60 I think. Including channels in English, mandarin, and Indonesian.

For breakfast which was included for us, we had a good selection of buffet choices on most mornings for all the continental (cereal, pikelets, croissants, raison scrolls), American (bacon and eggs) and traditional Balinese (nasi/mie goreng, stir fry vegetables, congee). There was also a chef standing there with a fry pan making fresh to order omelettes (yummy), scrambled or fried eggs. Slightly watered down orange juice, watermelon juice and milk was also available on the buffet table. Tea or coffee was available on request. Im not sure if they have the buffet all the time because we stayed over the easter break and also as there were tour buses dropping off mainly Chinese tourists at night so the villa was full. On the Tuesday morning, we had to pick one as there was no buffet. The mie goreng was very yummy!

We also had massages in the living room (would have been nice on the outside roof area but there were no beds). The 2 girls were very friendly and did a good job.

Location Ė if you have a driver, it shouldnít be a problem as it is a little outside of the main seminyak square area. The villa does offer the free shuttle to the square, but the van was out the morning we wanted to go so reception booked us a taxi. It cost 25,000 rupiah. Would have cost much less (I think the meter said 8000) if we walked to the main street down the road and hailed a taxi, but for booked taxies, there was that minimum. There are a few restaurants at the end of the road on Jalan Petitenget that were good. The villa isnít walkable distance to much else. There are a few other villas on the same road that have similar style.

One bad thing about the villa was that our villa main power switched off a few times. Not sure why it did that. It didnít look like it happened to other villas. Flick of the switch outside fixed it. No biggie, but it was a bit annoying as we had the air con on while we slept.

Overall, the stay was pretty much perfect :) couldnít ask for much more.
