Excellent restful stay

Reviewed March 20, 2012 1 person found this review helpful My wife and I just returned from a 7-night reward stay at the Conrad Bali. The experience was excellent with only one minor disappointment. I was in contact with the concierge some weeks before arrival to enquire about transportation and airport VIP escort. I booked both through the hotel. The VIP escort through DPS wasn't necessary, but was moderately reassuring. We were handed off to a pleasant Conrad rep who guided us to our car. Cost is somewhat more than a standard taxi, but at $16 still cheap by western standards. The driver was a very pleasant articulate guy who works at the hotel.

On arrival, we were greeted nicely and given a mint ice tea drink. We were upgraded to a deluxe ocean king, not a suite. I really should have enquired about this, but we were so jet lagged that I didn't push it. The hotel was not very busy during the week we were there and I later learned from another Diamon member who was there on a rewards stay that he was upgraded to a suite. I think that had I asked, we would have likely received an upgrade. That said, the room we were given was perfectly fine with a nice view of the pool (off the central building) and the ocean.

As Diamond members, we had access to the lounge in the suites area, a nice but relatively long walk away. Also, we had access to breakfast and afternoon tea at Rin and cocktails in the lounge. We also received 15% off all restaurant, spa, and laundry expenses.

Breakfast at Rin was outstanding: a choice of several cooked to order options and a full buffet. Staff were always gracious and we got to know a number of them during the week.

We did afternoon tea one day. This too was very nice. Rin has an excellent restful atmosphere.

The lounge at Spice was closed during our stay. I'm guessing that this might be a seasonal thing as we were there towards the end of the rainy season. We ate a few times at Suku and Eight Degrees South. Food at both places was very good. Prices were a bit high, particularly compared to prices outside, but reasonable by US standards.

On the first evening, a very nice cake was delivered to our room in celebration of our 10th anniversary. I had mentioned this when booking transport with the concierge and this was a pleasant surprise.

While there, we hired a driver for two days to see the island. Based on other threads, we booked with Dewa Marco (I've provided a review on Flyertalk.com). Marco was a personable, excellent guide who accommodated our suggested itinerary. We really enjoyed the two days with Marco and would wholeheartedly recommend his services.

The street outside the hotel, Jl Pratama, is a bit hard to deal with as a pedestrian since the sidewalks are not contiguous and there are many blind curves. It's relatively easy to walk to the ABC minimart for cheap soft drinks or snack foods. There's also an open air stall adjacent to the ABC where you can get a cheap SIM card for your GSM phone. Rates to the US using the Telkomsel Simpati SIM card were incredibly inexpensive using their VOIP access number.

Also recommended is the nearby restaurant, Bumbu Bali. They will provide free transport to and from the hotel, though it wouldn't be a tough walk on the beach path.

This was an excellent stay for us. Everyone who works at the Conrad is unfailingly friendly and welcoming. It was a very restful, fun vacation
