Four km west of Pulaki, 15 km east Labuhan Lalang, 28 km east of Gilimanuk, and about 40 km west of Lovina, this is one the most idylic resort in all of Bali. The tidy, black-sand, scenic beach leads to some of the island's best snorkeling, with great dropoffs just one km offshore.

Turtle Project at Pumetaran

One pleasing example of how tourism has benefited the local community and marine life is the Turtle Project at Pumetaran, a village on the far north-west coast.

The project started in 1994 at local diving centre. Local fisherfolk are encouraged to rescue turtles which are entangled in their fishing nets, and 'sell' them to project managers. The turtles are well fed and kept in tanks until they are ready to be released into the sea.

In four years, more than 800 turtles have been botn in captivity, or rescued and then later released into the sea. It is hard to determine just how successful the project is because released turtles are hard to keep track of, but just as important to the project coordinators is the education of the local community about their enviroment. Foreigners can make donations or fund the release of a turtle to the sea.
