Bali Sightseeing Tours : Besakih Tour

Besakih Temple, Karangasem
Besakih Temple is located on the village of Besakih at the foot of Mount Agung in Karangasem Regency, Bali. It's unclear, but it seems the name of Besakih as a village (not as a temple) is derived from the name of the greatest and holy temple in Bali. The name of Besakih as a temple itself is derived from the name of the first temple built in the 10th century in the big temple group. There are 18 complexes of public temple. Each has its own name. But the word of Besakih as a temple refers to the whole of temple complex in the area.Besakih temple is the mother temple of Bali island in some reasons. First, it is the holiest temple in Bali. Second, it is the greatest temple in term of spiritual sense, size and the number of structures (198 by one count). Third, it is the essence of all places of worship in Bali. Fourth, it is the unifying center of worship for all Hindu Balinese although they come from various families, clans, castes, village temples and family temples. All are unified by the Besakih Temple.

Besakih Temple, the legend and the religious ....
The base building of Besakih Temple was built by Mpu Markandeya, a leader of Siwaite from East Java, in the 9th century in the slope of Mount Agung. This first complex of temple is known as Basukian Temple nowadays. After that Besakih Temple had developed and been developend by all all Kings who ruled Bali after that including Sri Kesari Warmadewa and King Udayana. All Kings who ruled Bali from the first year after building of Basukian Temple gave their special attention to this temple. This remind us of the essence of the Besakih Temple. And now the Besakih Temple is maintained by Balinese Hindu under direction of PHDI (the most powerful institution of Hinduism in Indonesia), and assisted by the local Goverment of Bali. More than ever, the Besakih Temple also has got a special attention from international institution such United Nations. The world of society consider this temple as one of the most precious things for the world. With many various reasons including the increase of its glory from time to time, the Besakih temple should be the legend itself.

When the Mount Agung erupted in 1963, this temple didn't have a significant destroy, although its location is in the slope of the mount, exactly at the foot of the 3142-meter-high mount. But anything around th complex of the temple had a complete demage. When people who want to destroy this temple with bom in 1990s were exploded by their own selves in their journey to Bali from Jakarta, no one feel strange. Even they all died before arriving in Bali island ! All know that the temple from which all Balinese Hindu holds a great and holy ceremonis every year, every 5 year, every 10 year, every 100 years
