Villa Tirta Ayu is nestled in the rice paddies of eastern Bali, on the site of a sacred spring where the last king of Karangasem Regency built his weekend retreat. Villa Tirta Ayu is an elaborate water palace with a view of the ocean to the distant east and Mount Agung to the north.

Most of the windows from Villa Tirta Ayu overlooked the water palace. The Palace is not a single building but a compound consisting of six large pools of varying depths, an 11-tiered fountain and giant stone sculptures of wild boar, monkeys and cats. Villa Tirta Ayu guest can swim in the icy cold pools under their scrutiny. Access to the complex was not limited, Villa Tirta Ayu guest can also leisurely walk through the village of Tirta Gangga.

Villa Tirta Ayu marble bathroom was a separate enclosure attached to the bungalow proper and open to the sky. It was equipped for Balinese style bathing, in which ladies are used for rinsing. The convenient half-bath upstairs adjacent to the bedroom had a western-style toilet.

A spiral staircase led to the bedroom with its vaulted 12-foot ceilings and king-size bamboo bed. The comfortable foam mattress was covered with soft cotton sheets and an ikat bedspread. A wooden table and chairs and a cupboard with a locked drawer for valuables completed the furnishings
