A Legend Holy Temple
Situated on the southernmost coast of Bali, the Pura Luhur Uluwatu
is one of the most legendary holiest temples in Bali. Originally the temple was built in
the tenth century under direction of Dang Hyang Nirartha, a Hindu priest from East Java.
The temple itself stands on the rocks (it seems it has been united with the rocks),
exactly at the line of beach but far high from the reach of the water of the sea. Sheer
cliffs drop from the temple wall over 200 meters to the crashing surf below.
This temple is known as a place for Dang Hyang Nirartha to have a moksa (same as heaven)
at the end of His life. "Moksa" is one the the five basic principle beliefs in
Hinduism. Some could reach 'moksa' or heaven (to be united with the God) when all his sins
have been eleminated for certain reasons. When someone reaches a moksa he will never born
in this world anymore. In other words, he is free from the circle of incarnation, free
from sins, sad, sorrow, difficult and free from anything which could make someone's life
unhappy. In this temple, Dang Hyang Nirartha had his moksa in a perfect way. When he got
it, there was no body remain after that !
This temple has a very significant meaning for Balinese Hindu. It is one of the nine most
important big temples in Bali. Every 6 months there are many people come to this
temple for worship. Some months ago, this temple had been renovated because of some
demages happened to some parts of it.
You can see a fascinating sunset view from this temple, set by the sun, the sea, the
temple and the rocky hills around you. Sometime you will have a nice scene to take a
picture of a sitting monkey down beside the temple with a beautiful sunset background.
Note that it is recommended for yout to NOT bothering the group of monkeys in this temple.
Their home is around this temple. Even local people never bother them for any nauthy they
did. They just need some snacks from you as an additional menu for them. Please give them
some snacks if you are bringing some. Be kind to them, even if they are a little bit
nauthy to you. Keep your precious goods from their reach.
Afternoon tours to Uluwatu are most popular, as the descent from the Bukit back towards
Kuta has the most spectacular view of the hinterland, and the tour can be timed to reach
Kuta at sunset time, just as the last rays of the setting sun wash the ocean in waves of
glowing colour .
