SUMATRA
: Way Kambas, located on Southeast coast of Sumatra Islands, is the nearest Sumatra
National Park to Jakarta. This large area of swamp forest (covering 130.000 hectares of
secondary and primary forest on the East coast of Lampung Province), is a notable
sanctuary for the Asian Elephant and the Malayan Tapir. Tigers, deer and pigs thrive in
this grassland as well, although you still have got enough luck to see the tiger. Bird
watching is easy in the open lands and the flat marshes of Way Kambas. Long expanses of
mud flat along the shore, the mangrove and the reedy wet lands are the natural habitats
for many birds. Herons, milky stork, and flovers haunt the mud flats; birds of prey,
hornbills, malkohas, pigeons and kingfishers fly over the riverside of rain forest. The
fresh water swamp is known as the last habitat of The White-Winged Tree Duck (Cairina
Scutulata) in the world. Cairina Sculata is long on the I.U.C.N. endangered species list.
Visit the elephant training school and ride on the trained elephant into the forest in
search of wildlife. Stay overnight at the forest lodge, enjoy the serenity of nature far
away from the rush of big city life, or camp at the forest for more adventure.
