The Legong
This classical Balinese dance is possibly the most exquisitely feminine and graceful of
all.
The heavenly dance of divine nymphs, it is performed by young girls between the ages of
twelve and fifteen, and takes up to three years to be mastered. There are many different
types of Legong, but the most popular is the Legong Kraton, traditionally
performed in the palace for the enjoyment of royal guests. Based upon a story from the
semi mythical history of east Java around the 12th century , this Legong tells of maidens
lost in the forest, evil and heroic princes, battles and omen-bearing birds. The tiny
dancers, bound in gold brocade from top to toe, glide and flutter, their trembling
frangipani headdresses shimmering with each movement, their fingers arched backwards, eyes
darting sharply in rhythm to the music. A legong performance is usually accompanied by a
number of other classical dances, such as the welcoming Panyembrama, and the fiery Baris
warrior dance.
