Besakih Temple, Karangasem
Besakih Temple is located on the village of Besakih at the foot of Mount Agung in Karangasem Regency, Bali. It's unclear, but it seems the name of Besakih as a village (not as a temple) is derived from the name of the greatest and holy temple in Bali. The name of Besakih as a temple itself is derived from the name of the first temple built in the 10th century in the big temple group. There are 18 complexes of public temple. Each has its own name. But the word of Besakih as a temple refers to the whole of temple complex in the area.Besakih temple is the mother temple of Bali island in some reasons. First, it is the holiest temple in Bali. Second, it is the greatest temple in term of spiritual sense, size and the number of structures (198 by one count). Third, it is the essence of all places of worship in Bali. Fourth, it is the unifying center of worship for all Hindu Balinese although they come from various families, clans, castes, village temples and family temples. All are unified by the Besakih Temple.
