Cotton
The Balinese batik is made mostly of cotton. Living in tropical
climate, people like to wear cotton-based Balinese batik because
cotton is soft, very elastic and comfortable, it absorbs perspiration
quickly, has high washibility and withstands high temperature. However,
it wrinkles easily. Cotton is also suitable for Balinese batik as
cotton fibers produce soft, absorbent fabrics that are widely used
for clothing. It also has good color retention and is good to print
on. It is also strong and durable.
To maintain your batik-based cloth, you need to know how to care
it so your cloth be long lasting.
For batiks, you can use lerak as your detergent for washing. Lerak
is a kind of traditional detergent made from plant. You can find
lerak in batik shops. Soak the cloth in warm water that is mixed
with lerak. Rinse your fabric in warm water before you wash it with
your hand or machine. If you don't have detergent and prefer to
use washing machine, set the machine to the low. Do not bleach the
batik and do not expose it directly under the sun. When you iron
it, set it to medium.

Silk
Silk has been used by the Chinese since 27th century BC. The silk
garment has been the cloths for kings and noblemen. Despite its
high prices, silk is the beloved fabric because it is versatile
and very comfortable. Silk also absorbs moisture. When it is worn
in the summer it can cool the wearer while in the winter it can
make the wearer warm. Silk can be easily dyed. On the silk, people
can make patterns and print designs of their own. It needs no ironing
because silk retains its shape and is relatively smooth. However,
it has a poor resistance to sunlight exposure. Of all fabric, silk
is the strongest natural fiber and what makes it elegant the silk
is lustrous. Because of its properties, the care of your silk garment
should be taken into account.
It is better to wash your silk garment with hands. Make sure you
wash it in cool water. You only need to use a small amount of soap
or mild detergent to wash the silk. You must rinse the garment in
cold water after washing it. To dry your silk, just hang it or lay
it flat in a shaded area. If pressing is needed, you must use an
all cotton iron board cover, set the steam on low or moderate and
press on the wrong side of the fabric while ironing.
You can also send your silk garment to the laundry (dry clean).
However, you must make sure to inform the attendant that your garment
is made of silk.
You should not use bleach or any washing detergent with bleach.
To keep white silk white, you need to add peroxide and ammonia to
the wash. Adding a few teaspoons of white vinegar to the wash can
remove yellow from white silk.
